Government to back Reilly
Fine Gael and Labour will tonight vote confidence in the Minister for Health James Reilly.
Last night Reilly vowed to continue in his job and to continue with reforms, which he says are already delivering a better health service.
However, Fianna Fáil, who put down this motion of no confidence, accused him of presiding over bedlam, dysfunction and chaos.
Minister Reilly commenced his own defence, insisting he was going nowhere, and detailed why the health service is better after his 18 months in office.
He insisted it was ironic Fianna Fáil were accusing him of hypocrisy.
"It's the empty noise of a party that ran out of ideas and idealism a long time ago, a party that has damaged each and every family in this country because of the economic collapse they presided over."
"They are a party that sold our nation down the river."
The only other Cabinet member to come to his defence last night was Minister Pat Rabbitte, though his focus wasn't so much on supporting the Minister as attacking Fianna Fáil:
"What he did to this country and to this health service in particular, I'd crawl under a stone in the Burren and commune with nature for the rest of the time I would be around."
Tonight, when the debate resumes, all eyes will be on the performance of Junior Health Minister Roisin Shortall.
However, all Fine Gael and Labour TDs are expected to vote confidence in Reilly.
