Government fails to introduce free GP care

The government has failed to bring in free GP care for people with long-term illnesses, something they promised to do under the Programme for Government.
The delay has arisen after legal difficulties with the proposal to assess patients according to medical need, rather than income, which is usually how medical cards are assigned.
Health Minister James Reilly had given a guarantee that the scheme would be in place by this summer, after an initial coalition promise to introduce it in the first year of government.
According to the Irish Times today, the €15m set aside for improving Primary Healthcare for the long-term ill has been absorbed by the Health system, to help pay off the deficit there.
