Government accepts need for national flood alert system

25/11/2009 - 07:38:45
The Government is now accepting that a national flood alert system needs to be put in place.

Fine Gael had sought the system in the wake of the devastating floods of the past week, while gardaí say floodwaters in Athlone, Co Westmeath are rising further this morning.

A system is already in place on the Rivers Suir and Blackwater which can give a warning up to eight hours before a flood hits.

Minister of State with special responsibility for the Office of Public Works (OPW) Martin Mansergh says work on putting a national system in place will now get underway.

"Consultants will be appointed in the next couple of months," he said. "It’s obviously a vital priority."
