Gormley concerned about UK nuclear plans

11/11/2009 - 10:46:46
The Environment Minister John Gormley has said he has deep and valid concerns about the nuclear safety record in the UK.

Mr Gormley's comments come after the British Government announced this week that a further 10 nuclear power stations will be built in England and Wales.

Seven of the ten plants will be on the Irish Sea coast - including a new station on the Sellafield site.

The Green Party leader said he has raised the issue with the British Ambassador.

Mr Gormley said: "We had a meeting yesterday in relation to climate change, and the issue was raised.

"We have received documentation now form the embassy - around 1,000 pages - and you'll appreciate we haven't had time to go through it in detail, but we will be making a detailed assessment of that to ensure these plants operate safely and there is no threat posed to the Irish people."
