Cork may be getting its own day of celebration, if a local politician has his way.
The Deputy Lord Mayor of the city Emmet O’Halloran is calling for a world-wide holiday to celebrate all things about the region.
He says it would be akin to other holidays around the world such as Catalunya Day or the Annual Holiday of Quebec.
Councillor O’Halloran believes people of the area should have a special day that allows them to celebrate their unique culture and heritage.
“We have seen how other regions across the world do the same and why should Cork be any different?” he said.
He believes the concept of such a holiday could also deliver an economic dividend to the region.
“It’s about getting people to be imaginative and to reach out the global audience by saying Cork is welcoming and open for business. Here’s what’s great about our city and county why not come and visit?” he added.
He has suggested an online poll could be conducted worldwide to decide what day would be best celebrated as Cork Day.
