The Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore has said he is adamant the Government will continue to fight for a better deal on our bank debt, despite objections from Germany.

An official in the German finance ministry is reported as saying that a better deal on the bank bailout for Ireland would send out the wrong signal.

The Government here hopes that if Spain gets a good deal on any bailout of its banks, there would be knock-on benefits for us.

Speaking in Dublin this afternoon, Eamon Gilmore said negotiations on the bank debt would continue.

"The Government is determined to negotiate a deal on our bank debt which is in the best interests of the Irish taxpayers…We're going to pursue that," he said.

"We're going to continue with our efforts until we get a satisfactory outcome for the Irish taxpayer."
