Gilmore urges continuation of Syria sanctions

Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore has said that sanctions against Syria should continue.

Mr Gilmore is chairing a meeting in Brussels today of the EU Foreign Affairs Council, where talks on the Syrian crisis are among the issues being discussed.

Last week, the United Nations said the death toll there since the beginning of the civil conflict is approaching 70,000 - up almost 10,000 the start of the year.

UN human rights chief Navi Pillay said civilians are paying the price for lack of action by the Security Council.

Speaking in Brussels this morning, Mr Gilmore said sanctions need to continue, but warned against escalating the conflict.

"I think we do need to ensure that there is a continuation of the sanctions on Syria, but I think the further militarisation of the situation would not be a good thing to do," he said.
