Labour Party leader Eamon Gilmore has accused the Government of scapegoating public sector workers for the problems currently facing the country.
Mr Gilmore told delegates at SIPTU's conference in Tralee today that gardaí, teachers and nurses had been belittled for months as if they were the cause of the economic downturn.
He also called for a reconvening of the social partnership talks to bring about major public sector reform.
The Labour leader said the only way to achieve such reform was for the Government, employers and trade unions to sit down and work out an agreement.
He said the alternative to that was confrontation and strife that would not do any good for the country.
