Gilmore: 'No point speculating' on public-service retirement numbers
The Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore has said there is "no point speculating" on the numbers of public servants who may be prompted into retirement by up-coming changes to the pension scheme.
Sinn Féin has called for the introduction of a special charge to stop civil servants getting massive retirement packages after revelations that 55 more top civil servants are set to retire with packages of up to €634,000.
It is feared thousands of public sector workers including teachers, gardaí and nurses will retire before next February, when the Government will introduce changes to the pension scheme.
The teachers union the TUI said it had been "inundated" with calls from teachers saying they are considering early retirement.
Speaking this afternoon in his home constituency of Dun Laoghaire, Eamon Gilmore said there was no point speculating just yet on numbers.
"We have to wait until we see on the closing date whatt he take-up rate is actually going to be," he said.
