Gilmore hails Ireland's security role
Ireland’s role as chair of an international security committee shows the respect the country is held in around the world, Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore has claimed.
The Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) sits in Dublin for the next two days with talks focusing on resolving conflict and improving the security and rights of the citizens of the OSCE.
“It has been a great honour for Ireland to have been invited to lead this organisation at such an important time in international relations both politically and economically,” he said.
“It is a demonstration of the confidence and respect accorded to Ireland internationally, and which was evident again in our election to the UN Human Rights Council in November.”
US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Britain’s Foreign Secretary William Hague and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will attend.
The Tánaiste, chairperson-in-office of the OSCE, also said Ireland’s role on the OSCE had helped open doors and create opportunities at a time of great challenge and benefited the country in the run up to taking the EU Presidency in January.
The Foreign Affairs Minister joins fellow ministers from 50 nations and delegations from 70 countries at the two day conference at the RDS in Dublin.
