The Tanaiste and Northern Secretary have held talks on political developments in Northern Ireland.
The talks on the Haass proposals, legacy issues and the role of the two Governments in supporting progress in dealing with the past were on the agenda.
Eamon Gilmore said he and Theresa Villiers agreed that Northern Ireland urgently requires a new way forward on dealing with the past, that can command public confidence.
They also agreed that the early successful conclusion of the political talks represents the best opportunity to make progress.
They said maintaining the status quo is not a feasible or satisfactory option and both governments will actively support the talks in the interests of an early agreement being reached.
