National update: FF the biggest party; SF records steady rise as Independents continue surge

Most of the country's new Councillors are now elected, and a battle is underway between Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil to be the largest party on local authorities.

Labour continues to suffer a drubbing but is fighting it out for some final seats.

The Sinn Féin surge has seen the party elect 151 councillors so far. Independents and Others have a big presence with 224 seats.

Sinn Féin have taken a seat in south and west Kerry for the first time since 1960.

Former Tyrone hurler Damian Quigg was elected along with Fine Gael's Patrick Connor-Scarteen, John Francis Flynn FF, Norma Moriarty FF on the tenth count for South and West Kerry.

Sitting Fine Gael councillor PJ Donovan lost his seat.

They join Johnny Healy-Rae (Ind), Michael Cahill (Ind), Dan Mc Carhty (Ind) Seamus Cosai Fitzgerad FG and Michael O'Shea FF in South and west Kerry.

Meanwhile also in the count centre in Killarney Danny Healy-Rae gave a rousing speech beginning with a bar of a song.

"People of Kerry, I love ye," the poll topper announced. He put it up to Germany and Taoiseach Enda Kenny together saying his message was to delay repayments as Germany had done after World War 2.

"I have a message for Enda Kenny: stop hurting the people."

Fine Gael Mayor of Kerry Seamus Cosaí Fitzgerald has survived in South and West Kerry thanks to help from his west Kerry neighbour and rival Breandán Fitzgerald.

Fitzgerald has just been declared elected with the distribution of Breandán's 1522 vote on the 9th count in Killarney.
