'Gatekeepers' in North 'still preventing sexual-violence victims coming forward'

A women's aid campaigner claims some "gatekeepers" in the North still don't encourage victims of sexual violence to go to the proper authorities.

Marie Boyle has been reacting to the claims made by Mairia Cahill on the IRA "kangaroo court" she had to face when she reported allegations of rape by a republican.

Mairia claims there are other cases like hers, and Marie Browne believes some victims could still be suffering in silence.

The director of Foyle Women's Aid said the pressure discouraged some people from getting help.

"There are women who are still afraid to come forward," she said. "I believe there are gatekeepers within our community that don't encourage women to come forward to the right agency.

"The right agencies are those that have no vested interest in any political party and will look at the victim's prioriries first and not take in political (factors)."
