Gardaí 'were trailing car involved in M50 pile-up'

It is believed a car involved in last night's multi-vehicle crash on the M50 in Dublin was being trailed by gardaí.

Seven people, including three children, were injured in the five-car pile-up near the Ballinteer exit.

One man is said to be in a critical condition.

The Garda Ombudsman Commission has joined the investigation.

Spokesman Graham Doyle said the car had been travelling in the wrong direction.

"The car appears to have entered the M50 at junction 15 and was travelling northbound on the southbound carriageway (ie, in the wrong direction) when the collision occurred," he said, adding gardaí were talking to witnesses and gathering evidence to establish exactly what had happened.
