Gardaí to launch child rescue app

Ireland's first ever National Missing Person's Day will be marked later today at a special ceremony at Farmleigh House in Dublin.

To coincide with the event Gardaí are launching a free Child Rescue Ireland (CRI) Alert app, which it's hoped will allow the public to better assist officers investigating child abduction cases.

Over 7,000 people go missing in Ireland each year, almost 20 people a day.

The vast majority are found but hundreds of cases remain unresolved.

Fine Gael TD David Stanton says today's event will also give people the opportunity to come up with new ways of dealing with missing persons.

"Anything that can be done, I think should be done - the milk cartons, the cereal boxes and so on with descriptions and photographs - anything that will help jog peoples' memories," Deputy Stantons said.

"But people have suggestions and people have ideas and I notice that some of the organisations that are working in this area are coming together now to collaborate even more."
