The Government is reportedly planning to give the gardaí extra powers to breathalyse motorists over the Christmas period.

Reports today say Transport Minister Seamus Brennan is planning to sign regulations allowing the gardaí to breathalyse motorists suspected of committing minor offences like double parking or driving with a faulty indicator.

At present, the gardaí can only breathalyse somebody who they believe was driving while over the legal alcohol limit.
