Gardaí are clamping down on speeding today, as 'National Slow Down Day' begins.

The 24-hour operation will target drivers who are speeding - and aims to increase compliance with speed limits.

Last year, saw an increase in road deaths in this country - 195 people lost their lives.

As part of the campaign, gardaí released figures showing more than 100,000 speeding fines were issued by Gardaí in the first six months of the year.

90% of motorists fined were travelling more than 10 kilometres over the speed limit, and the majority of speeding fines are issued in 50 kph zones.
