Gardaí still ‘some distance’ from human rights compliance

The Irish Human Rights Commission has said the Gardai remain "some distance" from being fully compliant with accepted human rights standards.

In its latest annual report, the commission says there should be no clash between effective policing and respect for human rights.

Launching the document today, commission president Maurice Manning said the Republic should look to the example of the changes made in the North's police.

He also said he detected a determination within the Gardaí to put a real human rights policy in place.
