Gardaí reps and Commissioner have 'very serious exchange of views'

The Garda Representative Association has said it has had "a very serious exchange of views" with the Garda Commissioner.

Officials from the union briefed Martin Callinan today on its decision to pull out of the public sector pay talks.

The GRA, which represents rank-and-file officers, also used the meeting to outline the difficulties facing gardaí.

General Secretary of the GRA PJ Stone said: "The Garda Commissioner did us the courtesy of listening to every one of our executive members, and I'm quite satisfied that some of the information given to him today moved him, and gave him food for thought."

The Commissioner said after today's meeting that he told the GRA representatives how conscious he was of the "fantastic" work their members carried out on a daily basis.

He said he added that he told the GRA officials that he hoped "nothing would be said or done to interfere with the public support we enjoy".
