Gardaí renew appeal over suspicious death in Cork

Gardaí are making a fresh appeal for the public's help in an unsolved suspicious death in Co Cork.

The body of 37-year-old Peter Murphy was discovered at his home at Shanavoher, Bweeng, Co Cork on February 7 at approximately 1pm.

The scene was preserved and technically examined. A post mortem examination was carried out at Cork University Hospital by the assistant State Pathologist Dr Margot Bolster and established that Mr Murphy's injuries were inflicted as a result of an assault.

Gardaí have yet to make a breakthrough, despite talking to over 200 witnesses and viewing over 1,200 hours of CCTV footage.

Peter Murphy was last seen alive at his home at Shanavoher on Thursday, February 5 at approximately 2.30pm.

Superintendent Pat McCarthy of Mallow Gardaí said that Mr Murphy had been assaulted.

"Gardaí in Mallow are still actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of Peter Murphy," he said.

"Numerous enquiries have been undertaken and witnesses interviewed since the investigation commenced and I would like to thank the public in the Mallow/Bweeng area for their assistance to date.

"I would urge anyone with any information in relation to Peter’s death to contact the incident room at Mallow Garda Station or Crimestoppers.

"As a result of the post mortem, it was established that Peter Murphy's injuries were inflicted as a result of an assault.

"Basically there are unexplained injuries to his body."

Investigating Gardaí are appealing to witnesses or anyone with information, particularly those who travelled the Ballysimon Cross to Shanavoher Road between 2pm on Thursday, February 5 and 1.30pm on Saturday, February 7, to contact them at Mallow Garda Station on 022 31450, Crimestoppers 1800 250025, The Garda Confidential Line 1800 666111 or any Garda Station.
