Gardaí launch murder inquiry as Mayo shooting victim named locally

A murder probe has been launched after a 26-year-old was shot dead.

The victim, named locally as Owen Maughan, was shot a number of times in the back at a service station at Moneen in Castlebar, Co Mayo, yesterday afternoon.

He was taken to Mayo General Hospital where he died.

Deputy state pathologist Michael Curtis will carry out a post-mortem examination at the hospital later today.

The gun attack is believed to be linked to a Traveller feud with another family and similar gun attacks in the area.

Mr Maughan is the third member of his family to be shot. His younger brother was injured in a drive-by attack at the same service station in January but has since made a full recovery.

Gardaí have appealed for witnesses to come forward.
