Gardaí have launched an investigation after a kidnapping and attempted robbery at the GPO in Dublin.

Gardaí have today launched an investigation after a kidnapping and attempted robbery at the GPO in Dublin.

A senior executive at An Post, his wife and their two children were held hostage during the ordeal which began at their home in Co Kildare last night.

At around 9.30pm last night, an armed gang entered the home in Fennor in Co Kildare.

They held the man, his wife and their two children hostage before kidnapping the woman.

She was taken to a shed at the back of a derelict building in Rolestown, North Co Dublin where she was tied up.

Meanwhile, her husband was told to wait until morning when he was instructed to drive to the GPO and take out a sum of cash.

However, his wife managed to free herself and raise the alarm before any cash was handed over.

A full Garda operation was put in place and officers are appealing for information on any activity in the Fennore area, along the M7 and the GPO in Dublin and in Rolestown.

They are also looking for information on the two family cars used in the kidnapping; a silver Honda CRV registration number 05 DL 4275 and a silver Mercedes, registration number 11 D 13049.
