Gardaí are investigating an apparent attempt on the life of John Gilligan in Dublin.

It happened at a pub on the Navan Road at around 4pm yesterday afternoon.

It is believed an armed man - who entered the premises - was searching for the convicted drug dealer.

However it is understood the 61-year-old had been in another bar nearby at the time.

The gunman made his getaway on a motorbike in the direction of the Ratoath Road in Finglas.

Gardaí in the area - who pursued the man for a time - later recovered a discarded 9mm pistol.
