The Garda Ombudsman Commission is tonight probing an incident in Galway after the body of a man was taken from the River Corrib.
The man, who is in his 40's, was stopped at a Garda checkpoint in Galway city earlier in the evening. He was then seen entering the water just before 6.30pm.
Gardaí alerted the coastguard and a major search and rescue operation was launched involving the fire brigade and a rescue helicopter from Shannon.
The body of the man was located near the entrance to the lower bridge at Lough Atalia and airlifted to shore.
The remains have been taken to Galway University Hospital where a post morten will take place.
