Garda Ombudsman blames procedural shortcomings for death in custody
A Garda Ombudsman Commission investigation into the death of Dublin man Terence Wheelock who died after being found unconscious in a Garda station has found gardaí did not cause his death.
The report has however identified a number of procedural shortcomings including "a lack of clear instruction" which led to the presence of a ligature point in Terence Wheelock's cell at Store Street garda station.
The 20-year-old died in September 2005, three months after been found hanging in his cell at the Dublin city centre station.
Senior investigating officer with the Garda Ombudsman Commission Brian Doherty says they have made several recommendations to the gardaí, including a recommendation to review its custody facilities.
The Wheelock family have expressed disappointment with the findings of the Garda Ombudsman Commission report and are now considering whether to take this case further.
