Garda numbers should not decrease says Fianna Fáil

The government is being warned that gardaí need more personnel, not less, as it considers a new public service redundancy scheme.
Yesterday it emerged up to 5,000 workers in the public service will be offered redundancy at terms similar to those offered to former colleagues, who left in 2010.
It is part of an effort to cut further numbers in the sector, something the government must achieve under the terms of its bailout package.
Fianna Fáil Deputy Niall Collins wants the garda commissioner to appear before the Oireachtas committee on Justice to explain what progress the force has made investigating a recent spate of violent and gang-related deaths nationwide.
He is warning that crime remains a key priority and says gardaí should not be targeted in this latest round of cuts:
