Garda, Defence Force unions to meet govt officials

30/10/2009 - 07:56:20
Representatives of the Gardaí and the Defence Forces are due to meet officials from the Department of Finance today to discuss the upcoming Budget.

The meeting comes amid major unrest among public servants due to the Government's intention to impose a further €1.3bn cut in the public-sector pay bill.

Their unions are currently arranging a ballot for strike action on November 24 to protest at the move.

Gardaí and Defence Forces personnel are not allowed to go on strike, but they have made it clear that they will make their opposition heard if the Government presses ahead with more pay cuts.

Public-sector unions are already holding talks with government officials to discuss if an agreement can be reached to achieve savings through reform rather than cuts in core pay rates.

The prospects for such a deal remain unclear.
