Garda Commissioner needs to make further statement, says Bacik

Update 3.15pm: Labour Senator Ivana Bacik has said that Garda Commissioner O'Sullivan still needs to clear up what instructions she gave to her legal team.

“It may be that [Judge] O’Higgins didn’t want to go there because he didn’t want to be seen to be giving air to allegations against Maurice McCabe that he had rejected, and he rejected so firmly by saying that he was a man of integrity, and that’s hugely important,” she said.

“But I think now [that] it’s in the public domain, certainly the Commissioner needs to make a further statement of clarification.

“I think this issue of the legislation and the Commission of Investigation Act, that clearly does preclude some comment, but here there are matters that have been disclosed.

“They’re not matters of evidence, they’re matters in relation to instruction.”

Earlier: Further allegations of Garda malpractice are being made, it was reported today.

The Sunday Business Post reports a new whistleblower from a Midlands division of the force has come forward - as pressure mounts on the Garda Commissioner to clarify her position.

Nóirín O'Sullivan has been asked to clear up questions about her contribution to the O'Higgins Commission, which investigated corruption claims made by Sergeant Maurice McCabe.

The newspaper reports another Garda has written to the Justice Minister this week to outline his experience as a whistleblower.
