The Garda Commissioner Nóirín O'Sullivan has announced major changes to the structure of the force that will change how crimes are investigated.

A Strategic Transformation Office is to be established to coordinate the implementation of the reform programme - which is the largest management change in the history of the Gardaí.

A new unit to deal with child protection, domestic violence and human exploitation is being created and an additional chief superintendent will be appointed to oversee the unit.

The Garda National Drugs Unit is to merge with the Organised Crime Unit, while regional detective superintendents will have responsibility for the management of criminal investigations.
