Garda breaks ankle in struggle with man holding ‘firearm’

A Dundalk based garda sergeant is being treated for a broken ankle following a struggle in the early hours of this morning.

A taxi driver pulled up outside the Crescent Garda station in the town, at around 5.30am, claiming his passenger was refusing to pay the fare.

Reports suggest that as the unarmed gardaí attempted to arrest the man he became increasingly violent and pulled out what appeared to be a firearm, which he then pointed at gardaí.

In the struggle to disarm the man the garda sergeant suffered a broken ankle and the firearm was later found to be an imitation.

The garda is currently receiving treatment in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda and the man remains garda custody.
