Galway wins UNESCO City of Film designation

Galway has been designated a UNESCO City of Film.

It is just one of five global locations to have earned the permanent title out of 63 cities that entered the two-year campaign.

The title is awarded by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation to recognise an area's contribution to cinema and media production.

It is hoped that it will give the creative industries in the area access to a worldwide network and global opportunities.

The film and TV industries are already worth €72m to the city and county economies, and employ more than 600 people.

Galway joins Sydney, Australia, and Galway’s twin city of Bradford in the UK as a designated City of Film.

The bid was supported by Bord Scannán hÉireann/the Irish Film Board and its Chief Executive, James Hickey, who served on the committee which drove the bid organised by Galway Film Centre in association with Galway City and County Councils.

The final bid submission was submitted in March 2014.
