Galway publican recieves first smoking ban fine

A publican from Galway has become the first in the country to be prosecuted for breaching the smoking ban.

A publican from Galway has become the first in the country to be prosecuted for breaching the smoking ban.

Padraig Folan, who owns the Tí Hanrai, of Drin, Lettermore in Connemara was fined €1,200 and €500 in costs by Derrynea District Court.

The prosecution was brought by the Western Health Board.

In a statement this evening, the board has said its environmental health officers will continue to fully implement all aspects of the smoking ban legislation including seeking prosecutions where appropriate.
