Galway conference: Is the mandatory retirement age of 65 discriminatory?

Legal rights for the elderly are being discussed at a conference in NUI Galway today.

The event has been organised by the Mental Health Rights Group and the Employment law association of Ireland.

Key legal and policy issues will be discussed including the role of advocacy in upholding the rights of older people and the fair deal scheme.

Lecturer in law in NUI Galway Mary Keys, who is attending today's conference, said: "(We) were anxious to look at the rignts of older people, recognising they're not always respected.

"We're also looking at the mandatory retirement age of 65 to see whether or not it's discriminatory."
