Gale force winds with gusts of up 120 kilometres per hour have been battering the country this afternoon.
Dublin and Cork airports are reporting some delays due to the conditions.
Intending passengers, or those meeting people at the airport are being asked to check arrival and departure times in advance.
Met Éireann forecaster Eoin Mc Sherlock said Leinster can expect the worst of the bad weather this evening.
"This type of wind will bring trees down - there's a risk of electrical wires and telegraph poles being knocked down … that's already happened across the country today"
"That's storm-force winds … we've had gales over land today.
"We've had such mild weather the last week, week and a half, it's a bit of a shock to the system."
