Future of Irish Daily Star in doubt

The future of the Irish Daily Star hangs in the balance this weekend, after the British 50% shareholder in the paper announced it is taking "immediate steps to close down the joint venture".

The threat from Richard Desmond, the Chairman of Northern and Shell, comes after the paper printed topless photographs of the Duchess of Cambridge yesterday, which first appeared in a French magazine.

The National Union of Journalists says its gravely concerned about the future of 70 jobs at the paper.

The NUJ said it has been in contact with the British media group which co-owns the paper and understands that it wants the paper to end publication.

After publication by the Irish Daily Star, Chi magazine in Italy is promising a 26-page special edition tomorrow.

Northern and Shell have called the printing of the photos in the Star a "grotesque invasion of privacy", while Independent News and Media, the other co-owner, said it was "regrettable and in poor taste".

Media Editor for the UK Independent Ian Burrell has aknowledged that the media outside the UK view the Duchess as just another celebrity.
