The family of Nicola Furlong have described as a "travesty" a five-10-year sentence handed down to the man who murdered her, Richard Hinds.
The sentence was the maximum possible under Japanese law, as Hinds was tried as a minor. He turns 20 shortly.
Hinds smiled at his family as he left the court.
Nicola, 21, from Wexford, was found dead in a hotel room in Tokyo on May 24 last year after a night out with a friend at a concert.
Nicola's mother Angela said that given the pain Richard Hinds caused Nicola, the family did not believe the sentence was enough.
Her daughter Andrea said she was disgusted by the sentence, that she felt the family was "going home without justice" and that she wanted to leave Japan and never come back.
