The Environment Minister is to provide a further €5.6m for local authorities to support the operating costs of recycling facilities.
Some €6.4m was allocated between July and December of last year.
The money will be used to help local authorities in meeting the costs associated with the operation of their bring banks and civic amenity facilities for the period January to June 2009.
Minister John Gormley says the money represents an increase of €600,000 on the equivalent period in 2008.
He has also congratulated local authorities for their ongoing commitment to the provision of waste recycling facilities.
