Full take up of cervical cancer vaccine urged

The Irish Cancer Society is urging full take up of the cervical cancer vaccine when it becomes available to 12-year-old schoolgirls later this year.

It is making the call ahead of a lecture in Dublin this morning by the specialist who developed the original vaccine in Australia.

He will be formally welcomed by the Health Minister Mary Harney, who last week reversed her decision to cancel the vaccine programme because of cutbacks.

Dr Grainne Flannelly of the Irish Cancer Society said it's crucial that as many girls as possible are given the jab.
