Frances Fitzgerald launches scheme targeting repeat offenders

Minister for Justice Frances Fitzgerald is launching a new strategy today targeting repeat offenders.

Figures show repeat offenders are responsible for most crimes, with a quarter of offenders responsible for 75% of property crime.

This strategy, which has been piloted in three areas, will see the Gardaí and the Prison and Probation Services identifying prolific offenders and discouraging them from committing further crimes.

Vivian Geiran, Director of the Probation Service, said: "The real game changer is the coming together, the commitment to greater co-ordination and communication, and combining our resources.

"Ultimately only offenders can stop re-offending and we do have to use the carrot and the stick approach.

"If people are not co-operating with us while they are on bail, for instance, their bail will be opposed in the court."
