Four to appear in court in connection with Twelfth riots

Four people are due in court today in relation to disturbances in Belfast on Thursday.

A number of police officers were injured in the violence which erupted during annual 12th of July parades.

The PSNI has said that the cost of policing Thursday's Orange Order parades across the North could run into millions of pounds.

At least 20 officers were injured when violence flared between republicans and loyalists in the Ardoyne area of north Belfast.

Water cannon and plastic bullets were used by police, as pipe and petrol bombs, bottles and other missiles were thrown.

A number of cars were also hijacked and at least one was set alight.

The violence has been branded as "totally inexcusable" by the North's Secretary of State, Owen Paterson.

Four men have been charged with a number of public order offences in relation to the disturbances.

The men - aged 18, 22, 24 and 41 - are due to appear before Belfast Magistrates' Court later today.

PSNI Chief Constable Matt Baggot said he expects a number of others to be brought before the courts to face charges in the coming weeks.
