Former IFA President seeking to run for FG in by-election

Former IFA President John Bryan has confirmed he will seek a Fine Gael nomination to run in the Dáil by-election in Carlow/Kikenny.

The by-election is to take place in May and was brought about by the departure of former minister Phil Hogan to become Ireland's EU Commissioner.

Mr Bryan was President of the IFA from 2010 to 2014.

However his nomination is likely to prove controversial, as he is from the same area of Co Kilkenny as the current TD, John-Paul Phelan.

Other confirmed candidates for the seat include former Fianna Fáil TD Bobby Aylward, Sinn Féin councillor Kathleen Funchion, and Green Party councillor Malcolm Noonan.
