Former Garda: Cutbacks are compromising safety

A former Garda says the force is on the verge of collapse because of continued cutbacks.

Niall O'Connor left the force last month after five years service and says his former colleagues deal with "the worst humanity can offer" with very little back-up from superiors.

He believes that morale is is at rock bottom and says that cutbacks mean safety is being seriously compromised.

"Financially, they are trying to do things on the cheap," he said. "They are not willing to spend money on getting proper equipment.

"I've been in cars where if I met a member of the public with a car in a similar condition I would have seized it for being a defective vehicle.

"That's the reality and the GRA need to start shouting about this. Gardaí have been injured in road traffic accidents because the cars haven't been fit for purpose."
