A five-month old baby boy was killed in a road accident in Athlone this afternoon.

A five-month old baby boy was killed in a road accident in Athlone this afternoon.

The single-vehicle collision happened on the Athlone bypass at approximately 2.15pm, when the car collided with a barrier. No other vehicle was involved.

The infant was seriously injured and taken to Portiuncula Hospital, Ballinasloe where he was pronounced dead.

The male driver and female passenger, both in their late 20s, were uninjured. A three-year-old girl was also taken to hospital with injuries that are not life-threatening.

The bypass was closed between junctions 13 and 11 for a forensic examination, and reopened this evening.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses.
