The Minister for Children said that she is determined to pursue quality in the provision of early childhood care and education.

Francis Fitzgerald was speaking at the opening of a childcare conference in Dublin today which is being attended by more than 100 professionals in the industry.

Organised by Start Strong, a nationwide group dedicated to improving child care standards - they are calling for more funding in order to provide better care and diversity to children of all backgrounds.

Minister Fitzgerald said that she will ensure funds and systems are put in place to ensure a quality service for young children.

"We do need to invest in our children under five, we are very clear about investing in primary school onwards," she said.

"I am determined to make sure that happens."
