A firefighter has collapsed and died while on duty in Co Armagh.
The man fell ill after tackling a fire in the Kilwilkee estate in Lurgan last night.
He was part of a fire crew from Lurgan station that was called to deal with a burning car at around 9.30pm.
The blaze was brought under control in just over 10 minutes. The firefighter collapsed at the scene shortly afterwards. Colleagues gave immediate first aid and requested an ambulance.
The man was treated at the scene by paramedics and was taken by ambulance to Craigavon Area Hospital but could not be saved.
Chris Kerr, chief fire officer at Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS), passed his condolences to the man’s family.
“It is with deep regret that I can confirm that a firefighter died suddenly while on operational duty last night. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues at this extremely difficult time.”
Mr Kerr said an investigation into the circumstances was underway.
