Finance officials face Public Accounts Committee

Officials from the Department of Finance will face questioning today over the censoring of information on the bank guarantee scheme.

Officials from the Department of Finance will face questioning today over the censoring of information on the bank guarantee scheme.

The Dáil's Public Accounts Committee will ask why all the documentation they requested was not supplied.

Last week PAC released 50 sets of documents received from the Department of Finance.

They revealed that just hours before the bank guarantee was put in place the Government was advised against the move by its own financial consultants.

The notes and emails also revealed the former financial regulator assured the Government there was no solvency issue with Anglo Irish Bank. However, many of the documents are heavily censored with words and paragraphs blacked out.

All of these issues will come under scrutiny when PAC holds its first public hearings into these documents later this morning.

Senior officials will be the first witnesses today. The Committee could call the Finance Minister to give evidence in the weeks or months ahead.
