A new report has found that Irish suicide levels in the 1950s and 60s were three times higher than official records showed at the time.

The report, published today by the Health Research Board, states that controlling alcohol problems may be the only proven way to tackle suicide and self-harm.

It was also found that suicide rates among 15 to 34-year-old males peaked in 1998, and have been falling since then.
