Fianna Fáil has called on the Government to do more to make college more affordable.
A survey by the Irish League of Credit Unions revealed today that it can cost up to €950 per month to send a student to college.
Eight out of 10 parents save for an average of eight years to try and pay for their child's third-level education.
Fianna Fáil's Charlie McConalogue said that the student registration fee needs to come down.
"The Government should do what they committed to do - not increase the fees any more than they are already," he said.
"And also we need to ensure than maintenance grants are actually provided to those who need that support to get through college, because the way that we have to make sure our country gets back on its feet is actually through education and it is the minimum we can do for all our young people is actually to ensure they have access to that."
College registration fees were significantly increased during the last Fianna-Fail led Government.
