A Fine Gael TD has said the Government should have all of the details of the water charges worked out by this summer.
"We should have (the details) before the summer recess," he said.
Deputy Bernard Durkan's comments came after Junior Minister Fergus O'Dowd last night warned that homeowners who do not pay their water charges could be cut off.
Opposition TDs have criticised the Government's handling of the new charge with many saying the public needs to know now how much this is going to cost.
Deputy Bernard Durkan said it was never easy to communicate bad news to the public, but that the Government did feel the public's pain.
"We all fully understand the burden that's being placed on the general public at present…We hurt when the people hurt," he said.
"It hurts and annoys me when I see the people I represent being hit again and again."
