FG Senator 'going to work everyday' to get changes to abortion Bill

Opposition parties are giving a cautious welcome to the draft legislation on abortion.

Fianna Fáil and Sinn Féin have said they will examine in detail the Heads of the Protection of Life during Pregnancy Bill before formally deciding their positions.

Meanwhile, ahead of this evening's Fine Gael parliamentary party meeting, one Senator said she will vote against the draft legislation if it remains unchanged.

Senator Fidelma Healy-Eames said: "If this Bill was the final Bill today, my answer is yes I would vote against it.

"I am going to work everyday to get the changes I want, if that is possible."

Fianna Fáil said it will now begin a detailed examination of the draft legislation on abortion.

The party's Health spokesperson Billy Kelleher said the Heads of the Bill bear many similarities to the Protection of Human Life in Pregnancy Bill 2001 - with the addition of a panel of experts to assist women who are suicidal.

Mr Kelleher said the parliamentary party will hold a meeting this week to consider the proposals which will inform Fianna Fáil's position.

The Sinn Féin leader Gerry Adams welcomed the publication of the draft abortion legislation, saying women in Ireland have been waiting for 21 years for the proposals.

Deputy Adams says his party will give careful consideration to the Heads of the Bill:
